A LITTLE HISTORY

Chinese celery, also known by a variety of names such as khuen chai, kan-tsai, kin-tsai, kun choy, qin cai, and kinchay, has a fascinating history dating back centuries in Asia. Originally native to North Asia where it grew wild, this plant was domesticated and cultivated for its culinary and medicinal uses.

  • Origins and Diffusion
    The earliest records of Chinese celery date back to ancient times, when it was prized by the Greeks as a potherb and by the Romans for its decorative properties in garlands. In China, Chinese celery has been cultivated since the Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD), making it a long-standing culinary ingredient in Asian cuisine.
  • Cultivation and Adaptation
    Chinese celery prefers a cool climate and grows well at high altitudes in the tropics as well as in temperate regions with adequate humidity, and it tolerates our cold climates in Quebec and Canada.
  • It is often grown in marshy areas and is particularly prolific in the Chinese provinces of Henan, Shandong, and Hebei. This plant is also exported to other Asian markets, enriching local cuisines with its distinctive flavor.
  • Global Diffusion and Culture
    Outside of Asia, Chinese celery is less common but is grown on a small scale and sold at produce markets and specialty grocery stores. Its cultivation requires fertile soil and some attention to moisture, although the plant is relatively cold-hardy once established.

In summary, Chinese celery embodies a rich and diverse history across Asia, being both an essential element of traditional cuisine and an ingredient valued for its potential health benefits. Its global diffusion continues to contribute to the culinary diversity and richness of Asian food culture.

Immune Support:

  • The vitamins and minerals in Chinese celery, such as vitamin C, help support the immune system. Regular consumption can help strengthen the body's natural defenses against infection and disease.
    Antimicrobial Effects:
  • Some studies suggest that Chinese celery may have antimicrobial properties, helping fight bacterial and fungal infections. This may play a role in promoting oral health and preventing digestive infections.
  • Use;
    Chinese celery is usually eaten raw or lightly cooked to preserve its nutrients. It is often added to salads, stir-fries, and soups in Asian cuisine.

In summary, Chinese celery offers an interesting range of health benefits, from digestion and immunity to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Incorporated regularly into a balanced diet, it can help improve your overall well-being.
