Puerto Cortes cherry tomato seeds, a hardy variety native to Central America. These small tomatoes offer an exceptionally sweet flavor with balanced fruity notes.

A LITTLE HISTORY

This delicious cherry tomato, my favorite for flavor, was collected by the USDA in 1976 along a road near the village of Puerto Cortés, about 20 miles from San Pedro Sula, the second largest city in Honduras (and currently one of the most violent cities in the world, best known in the United States as the starting point of a notorious migrant caravan).

The fruits are not uniform – indicating its semi-wild origins – ranging from round to somewhat flat, rarely more than an inch and a half in diameter.

The taste is a perfect blend of sweet and sour. This tomato was bred to honor the resilient residents of the San Pedro Sula region, which has been severely affected by drug trafficking violence, corporate corruption, and political oppression.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a real gem in this tomato. It is very productive and grows without the need for trellises, as it is of wild origin.

We hope that when you eat this tomato, it reminds you of the humanity of the refugees fleeing Honduras for a better life in the United States.

Remember that the delicious fruit you are enjoying once nourished those people who have abandoned it and so much more—not because they want to harm us, but because they want to help themselves and their families.

It is only a symbol of all they left behind, of all the trappings of home they will never be able to taste, see, feel, or know again.

HOW TO GROW?

As with all tomatoes, start indoors in March

Plants should be spaced 2 to 3 feet apart.

This is a semi-wild tomato, so it doesn't need much care once established. It will benefit from a trellis, but with its sprawling growth habit, it will still produce even if left to grow on its own. I personally grow it without a trellis.

Very rare, take care of it!
