A LITTLE HISTORY

Freckled Lettuce (Forellenschluss)

  • Origin and History
Freckled lettuce, also known as Forellenschluss, is a heritage variety first recorded in Austria and Germany in the late 18th century, around 1793. Its name, which literally translates as “speckled like a trout,” refers to the purple spots that adorn its bright green leaves.

  • Features and Ratings
Although Forellenschluss is not as widely marketed as classic romaine lettuce, it enjoys great popularity in Europe and America. In 1997, it was featured in a tasting competition where it won first prize among 900 lettuce varieties, confirming its exceptional taste and visual appeal.

This lettuce stands out for its unique color and slender shape, making it a beautiful addition to gardens and market stalls. Its crisp texture, combined with a pleasant sweetness, makes it a great ingredient for salads and other dishes.

  • Culture and Growth
Freckled lettuce prefers sunny environments and thrives in full light. Its growth is robust and it is able to withstand summer temperatures, not going to seed easily. However, it is important to note that if the soil temperature exceeds 75°F (about 24°C), the seeds of this lettuce may go dormant, slowing production.

Conclusion
Freckled lettuce, with its Austrian heritage and distinctive appearance, is not only a culinary delight but also a symbol of diversity in lettuce varieties. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its delicious taste and adaptability to growing conditions, making it a popular choice for chefs and home gardeners alike.
