Botanical Extracts: The Heart of Natural Skincare
When reading the ingredient list of a natural skincare product, it's common to find names like Agastache Foeniculum Extract, Plantago Major Extract, or Tilia Cordata Flower Extract.
But what does the term botanical extract actually mean?
Why is it so important in the creation of many natural skincare products?
At ANOKIAN NATURE, we believe that a quality product begins long before its manufacturing. It starts in the earth, at the heart of the plants we have passionately cultivated since 2005.
What is a botanical extract?
A botanical extract is obtained by using a plant or a part of it, such as flowers, leaves, roots, or stems, to extract its naturally occurring compounds. Depending on the desired outcome, this extraction can be carried out in different mediums, such as a vegetable oil, vegetable glycerin, water, or a hydroalcoholic solution.
This method allows for the recovery of some of the plant's natural constituents to integrate them into natural skincare products, soaps, balms, massage oils, or other botanical creations.
Why use a botanical extract?
Simply adding a dried plant to a cream doesn't always allow for a full benefit of its characteristics.
Preparing a botanical extract promotes better incorporation of the plant's compounds into the formulation, while contributing to a more homogeneous texture and consistent quality from one batch to another.
Botanical extracts have thus become an essential component of many natural formulations, as they allow for the integration of the richness of plants into various types of products while respecting the balance of the recipe.
Why are not all botanical extracts created equal?
The quality of a botanical extract depends on many factors.
It all starts with the quality of the plant itself: its variety, soil richness, climatic conditions, harvest time, and how it is dried all influence the final result.
The choice of extraction liquid, maceration time, temperature, and preservation methods also play an important role.
This is why two extracts from the same plant can have different characteristics depending on how they were prepared.
Our approach at ANOKIAN NATURE
Since 2005, we have been cultivating several of our plants directly on our farm in Quebec, without synthetic pesticides.
Every season is different, and each harvest requires patience, expertise, and observation.
When the plants reach maturity, they are hand-harvested, then carefully dried to preserve their quality. Several of our botanical extracts are then prepared in our manufacturing laboratory, in small quantities, using our own artisanal methods.
Our laboratory allows us to control every step, from the preparation of botanical extracts to the manufacturing of our natural skincare products. This approach allows us to ensure the quality, traceability, and freshness of our raw materials.
Plants cultivated with care
Throughout the seasons, our farm hosts several plants that find their place in our botanical creations.
Among them are purple loosestrife, sacred sweetgrass, plantain, mallow, linden, matricaria chamomilla, balsam fir, rosehip, and many other species adapted to our Quebec climate.
Each plant has its own story, its fragrance, its harvest period, and its personality. It is this plant diversity that inspires each of our creations.
Botanical extract or essential oil?
These two ingredients are often confused, yet they are very different.
An essential oil is generally obtained by distillation or expression, depending on the plant. It is very concentrated and contains only a part of the compounds naturally present in the plant.
A botanical extract, on the other hand, is obtained by an extraction process in an appropriate medium, allowing for the recovery of other naturally occurring compounds in the plant.
The two ingredients can be complementary, but they do not fulfill the same role in a formulation.
FROM NATURE TO YOUᴹᴰ
At ANOKIAN NATURE, we believe that the most beautiful products are born from respect for nature and the time it requires.
Cultivating our plants, harvesting them by hand, preparing our botanical extracts in our laboratory, and manufacturing our creations in small quantities have been part of our daily life for over twenty years.
Behind every botanical extract lies a story: that of a seed that grew on our farm, of a harvest carried out at the right time, of artisanal know-how, and of a passion for plants that is passed down through the seasons.
Because before being an ingredient listed on a label, a botanical extract is above all the result of a long work of the land, carried out with care from our farm to our laboratory.
